Bmx Diaries - Tony Blair in the Wilderness

..after Tony is questioned by CID he gets back to work... but cycling home he gets some unwanted attention...and a familiar tune sets him thinking...

A set of headlights jabbed main beam ahead, the cores of light blinding me, coming straight at me on the runway. No game of chicken worried me. I cycled harder to reach the end of the runway, to get away from the site, to escape. I closed my eyes. There was a sliding of tyres, and an engine cut out in front of me. I opened my eyes. Someone walked in front of the headlights.

“You’re not making any forward progress, Tony. Now get in, sir.”

“I’m okee-dokey, Breeze. Leave me alone, bud. Progress is my department.”
McKong took hold of the BMX.

“You’ll bust a gut pedalling. Now get in, Tony.”

He pulled the BMX from under me, and laid it on its side in the back of the truck. I had no choice but to climb in. McKong hit a gear, lurching and powering over the smooth tarmac towards the approach road. He slammed second and raced towards Sorensen’s turning. He pulled onto the coast road, snapping third and fourth. He’d been taking surplus hardcore for Carse’s new bases, and he thought he’d give me a lift.

“See. We’re nearly there already. McCreedie’s petrol is cheaper than pedalling, sir.”

“Whatever.”

I wasn’t really listening, but then McKong hummed a familiar tune and scratched his nose with his thumb. The song reminded me of something, but I didn’t know what it was.

“Cool tune. Very cool tune, McKong.”

...to be continued...
